ITALIAN ISLAND HOPPING IN THE STUNNING SOUTH
A mini guide
Who doesn’t love a little island time?
Time feels slower, people are more relaxed, and even life itself just seems to feel that little bit simpler.
Having travelled to many islands around the world – I can certainly vouch for that island effect.
There’s just something about being surrounded by all that water that seems to connect us with a sense of freedom and peace that’s harder to come by on the mainland.
And though they can be drastically different, every island seems to offer its own kind of magic. Whether it’s a melting pot of cultures, particularly stunning scenery, or maybe even their unique way of life, I believe there’s an island for everyone and these three definitely know how to cater for a mixed crowd.
What do you look for in an island holiday?
Effortless chic, natural beauty or authentic charm?
These Neapolitan islands have it all.
Capri:
THE A-LIST HANGOUT
With dramatic cliffs, deep blue sea, world-class restaurants and high-end brands, it’s easy to see why this island has long been a favourite hangout for A-list escapes.
The charm of Capri hits you instantly.
Beautiful bougainvillea drapes over elegant villas, boutique shops line the timeless, cobbled streets, and boats glide past frequently, introducing travellers to the islands spectacular scenery.
Arriving in Capri feels like stepping into a picture-perfect postcard of ‘La Dolce Vita’.
Capri highlights can be seen in a day. But to truly soak up the feeling of this beautiful island, I’d recommend spending the night.
What to do: Take the chair lift in Anacapri and enjoy spectacular views over the island. Brace yourself for this solo ride: It’s not for those with a fear of heights.
Where to eat: Lido del faro. Bonus points: It’s a beach club and a gourmet restaurant. Another great way to spend the day.
Where to stay: Capri Tiberio Palace. I was blown away by their creative blend of contemporary and retro design, their exceptional service and the perfect pool area with a view. Get in touch for exclusive booking benefits.
Bonus Tip: Make sure to get a boat around the island – It’s beautiful to admire from the water. It’s also the best way to see the famous ‘Grotta Azzurra’, a sea cave with bright blue, crystalline water.
Ischia:
THE SPA LOVERS PARADISE
For me, Ischia was love at first sight. A calm, understated island devoted to relaxation, rejuvenation, and bliss.
Where Capri screams glitz and glam, Ischia offers its tranquil vibe and natural resources to relax you, revitalise you and feed you with its incredible home-grown produce.
And as a volcanic island, this fertile land is abundant with those natural resources. From the food and drink (think farm-to-table dishes and family run vineyards) to the show stopping spas (seaside sanctuaries showcasing the islands thermal waters), Ischia is a slow travel haven, perfect for those looking for a deeper connection to themselves and their destination.
What to do: Soak up the serenity at the islands stunning spas. I recommend Negomo and Giardini Poseidon.
Where to eat: Da Peppina Di Renato. Full of character and hard to find. A true hidden gem. (Get in touch for help locating it!)
Where to stay: San Montano Resort and Spa. It boasts its own 11 pool thermal park and offers some of the best views on the island (with breathtaking sunsets!). Book with me for booking benefits.
Bonus tips: Neapolitans love to visit this little paradise in August when they generally take their annual holiday – best to visit outside of these times to avoid the crowds. At a fair size, the island is best explored by open jeep or scooter to fully take in its beauty.
Procida:
THE LAID-BACK LOCAL VIBE
Quiet and picturesque, Procida is a popular stop for locals on their summer boat days around the bay of Naples.
Not only is the scenery around the island stunning but with its welcoming array of pretty pastel buildings, approaching Procida from the water for a spot of lunch feels almost like entering some kind of Italian island fairytale.
You won’t find much to do on the island, but that’s part of the allure. A simple and unassuming spot offering authentic roots, crumbling charm and a slice of slow-paced local life.
It even earnt the place of Italy’s Culture Capital for 2022, beating many more well known competitors – so this island is definitely one to watch!
What to do: Admire the views close by before lunch by the waters edge.
Where to eat: La Lampara. Quality, service + views: it has them all.
Where to stay in Procida: I’m yet to stay overnight on the island. Get in touch for my favourite recommendations from a far.
Bonus Tip: Check restaurant times to make sure you catch them open – there’s certainly no 24 hour service on this relaxed island.
